White Rabbit uses bidirectional wavelengths over a single fiber. Due to
chromatic dispersion the forward- and backward propagation delay over
the fiber differs. This difference is expressed in the WR asymmetry
coefficient alpha which is a fiber property.
WR users used to measure the asymmetry coefficient in the laboratory
before the fiber is deployed and used in a WR network. This is not
feasible when WR is deployed in existing networks. Moreover, there is a
need to verify and monitor the asymmetry coefficient in existing
networks.
Currently the work on in-situ determination of the Alpha parameter is in a laboratory state and work is in progress.
