DDS upgrade project meeting notes.
This page describes the outcomes and discussion points raised in
meetings between Creotech and CERN. The outline of the project is to:
- Create new schematics for a EDA-03010-v3.0.
- Generate a new PCB layout description.
- Provide a Production Test System (PTS) that can be used to validate
the cards that have been
manufactured.
Meeting 23/01/2019 - present Creotech (Mikołaj Sowiński), CERN (John Gill)
Items discussed:
- JG gave an overview of the project's direction, with the final goal
to produce a RFoWR starter kit. This kit will encompass hardware
(orderable from vendors like Creotech) and software packages that can
been downloaded from CERN to configure device drivers, firmware and
gateware (FPGA images). Working together, these hardware and software
components will provide users with a quick start guide to configuring
and controlling their RF distribution project.
- Creotech have not yet received notification that the contract has
been signed and accepted by CERN.
- ACTION: A1.1 - JG to seek clarification with EVB about the
status of the contract.
- Creotech would like access to the CERN Altium DRC rules (schematics
and layout) that are mentioned in DO-30550.
- ACTION: A1.2 - JG to provide Creotech with these documents.
- We discussed the need for both Creotech and CERN to place
documentation (e.g. schematic bundle) in a common place.
- ACTION: A1.3 - JG to investigate where CERN can place these
documents.
- JG enquired about the current status of the schematics. CERN received
an updated set of schematics from GK (09/01/19). This was reviewed at
CERN and comments attached. Is there a new set of schematics addressing
the issues raised?
- ACTION: A1.4 - MS to clarify the schematic status with
GK.
Meeting 30/01/2019 - present Creotech (Mikołaj Sowiński), CERN (John Gill)
Items discussed:
- MS gave an update from Creotec about progress. Creotech have received
6 prototype boards 4 prototype boards, manufactured according to
the schematics and layout received by CERN on the 14/01/2019. Creotech
are starting to test and update the PTS for this new design.
- Outstanding action items (A1.1, A1.2, A1.3 and A1.4)
- ACTION: A1.1 - JG to seek clarification with EVB about the
status of the contract.. DONE. Creotech have received the
contract.
- ACTION: A1.2 - JG to provide Creotech with the CERN Altium DRC
rules (schematics and layout) that are mentioned in DO-30550.
OUTSTANDING*. No documentation of these rules has yet been obtained.
A way forward is likely to involve CERN waiving this requirement and:
- Creotech will produce schematics and layout to their own professional
standards.
- BE-CO-HT will review deliverables and provide feedback until
agreement reached with Creotech.
- Deliverables passed to EDA, feedback from EDA relayed to Creotech.
- One suggestion is that additional hints regarding DRC may be inferred
from previous revisions of the boards.
- ACTION: A1.3 - JG uploaded and tagged the two releases received
from Creotech. DONE
- ACTION: A1.4 - MS to clarify the schematic status with GK.
DONE* MS seeked clarifaction of A2 and A4, they are just trival note
requests.
Additional items and discussions raised:
- ACTION: A2.1 - Creotech to monitor the temperature of the new
prototypes and provide preliminary feedback.
- ACTION: A2.2 - JG to update the documentation of the schematic
status table to clearly show status of all outstanding items.
- ACTION: A2.3 - MS to provide feedback on the requested changes
to the schematic (see A15, A16 and A17 of the schematic review).
- ACTION: A2.4 - JG to clean-up the repository, removing unwanted
directories and placing suitable .gitignore files.
- ACTION: A2.5 - JG to check the schematic regarding schematic
action A4 on the P3V3 power
rail.
Meeting 06/02/2019 - present Creotech (Mikołaj Sowiński), CERN (John Gill)
Items discussed:
- Creotech have released a new version of the schematics,
- Testing of the prototype boards has gone well. Prototypes pass an
updated PTS test.
- Discussion of temperature relating to the current v2.0 board and in
particular the AD9516 temperature. Current boards show temperature
sensor of ~60 degC, but thermal camera highlights AD9516 is much hotter
and operates > 80 degC currently without any airflow. Some marginal
behaviour has been observed - particularly in the 125 MHz external WR
ref clock.
Existing items:
- A1.2 - CERN will waive the altium DRC rules checklist.
DONE*.
- A2.1 - Creotech to measure temperature of V3.0 prototype boards.
Some concerns here as the new design uses two AD9516s,
OUTSTANDING*.
- A2.2 - Schematic action items have been updated DONE.
- A2.3 - New schematic update from Creotech DONE.
- A2.4 - Repo cleaned, Creotech now have direct write access.
DONE*.
- A2.5 - JG to check P3V3 power rail, (schematic action A4)
OUTSTANDING*.
New items arising:
- ACTION: A3.1 - JG to provide EEPROM contents.
- ACTION: A3.2 - JG to review new schematics from Creotech.
- ACTION: A3.3 - Creotech to make a phase noise measurement with
the new prototypes.
Meeting 27/02/2019 - present Creotech (Mikołaj Sowiński), CERN (John Gill)
Items discussed:
- Creotech have released a new version of the schematics. Effectively v3.4, it's anticipated to be the final schematic version.
- Creotech have started work on new 6-layer layout.
- Altium Component libray for LTC6240IS5 complete and available.
- EEPROM Still looking at finalising the contents and layout.
Existing items:
- A2.1 - Creotech to measure temperature of V3.0 prototype boards. Some concerns here as the new design uses two AD9516s, DONE. Temperature sensors placed underneath each ad9516.
- A2.5 - JG to check P3V3 power rail, (schematic action A4) DONE. Decoupling is good.
- A3.1 - JG to provide EEPROM contents. OUTSTANDING.
- A3.2 - JG to review new schematics (v3.3) from Creotech. DONE.
- A3.3 - Creotech to make a phase noise measurement with the new prototypes.OUTSTANDING JG supplied basic demo-dds tarball that works with v2.0 version of the card.
New items arising:
- A4.1 - Creotech to make minor update to include schematic pdf in v3.4 schematic release.
- A4.2 - JG to review v3.4 schematics and formally accept.
- A4.3 - JG to investigate a formal method to export Altium library contents.
