200 ksps ADC documented

Ross Millar, student at the University of Glasgow, has worked for six months at CERN to debug the 200 ksps ADC, write firmware for it and develop a new version of the circuit board. He wrote an extensive report about his work.
Before this ADC can be produced in quantity, the final design has to be verified and the firmware needs to be re-aligned with the firmware of the 100 MSPS ADC so it can more easily be maintained and driver code can be more easily shared.
We needed to put the project on hold because of lack of manpower and the availability of a commercial and proprietary alternative for CERN's applications.

09-08-2011: Successful Data Acquisition

There has been successful data acquisition on all input channels of the current 100ksps 16bit ADC FMC.

The FMC now requires some redesign to ensure its full compliance with the FMC standard, however the current FMC shall be suitable for testing and further developing the firmware.

A plot of the acquired data for a sine wave incident on one channel can be seen below:

14-06-2010: Evaluating connector type

We are still looking for the right connector type to use to get ten or more differential channels in. One suggestion is to use the Camera Linkhttp://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_WW/electronics/home/productsandservices/CameraLink/ standard using individually shielded twisted pairs. But also cheaper alternatives as simple flatcables are considered. One may follow the discussion in the Mailing list or its archives.
