Compact Universal Timing Endpoint Based on White Rabbit

Project is obsolete. See cute-wr-dp for a similar board.

Introduction

The cute-wr project is a standalone White Rabbit Node implementation on a FPGA Mezzanine Card. The idea is to have a compact, low-cost and common WR NIC for synchronous DAQ frontends and other applications!

Project is obsolete. See cute-wr-dp for a similar board.

Structure Design

cute-wr is originally derived from and keeps firmware compatibly with the SPEC board. The White Rabbit Node Reference Design has detailed information on infrastructure design.

Gateware structure:

Features:

  • Standalone Operation;
  • Etherbone + sdb suppoort;
  • Remote firmware upgrading & multiboot support; (in dev)
  • Spartan 6 (XC6SLX45T-3FGG484C);
  • 32MBit SPI FLASH (M25P32-VMF6P);
  • 64Kbit I2C EEPROM (24AA64T-I/MC);
  • FMC LPC interface;
  • JTAG and RS232;
  • External CLK reference (work in master mode);
  • 125MHz CLK and PPS output;
  • 3 user LEDs;

Application orientation

Current status

Date Event
20-10-2011 Start of project. Framework design finished.
29-11-2011 Schematic and PCB drawing reviewed.
15-02-2012 PCB fabrication and assembly finished in Tsinghua.
12-03-2012 Start of the project management cute-wr on ohwr.org.
14-03-2012 First demo worked together with WR switch and SPEC.
12-05-2012 In-depth development and test with wr-cores::spll_ng branch, getting ready to publish a separate branch for cute-wr and other compact, standalone WR reference designs.
12-06-2012 Presented at IEEE realtime 2012 conference at Berkeley. Development of White Rabbit Interface for Synchronous Data Acquisition and Timing Control
10-25-2012 Release of cute-wr v2.0
27-01-2017 Project is obsolete. See cute-wr-dp for a similar board.
Main issue is that the power chip of CUTEWR is not good enough for series production.

Version 1.0 has been tested on March 5, 2012, and showed a similar performance comparing with SPEC boards.
Version 2.0 tesetd on Oct, 25, 2012, tested under wrpc-sw and wr-cores (branch:cute-wr).
